Why stay on the west side
Downtown hotels put you near English Bay, but most of Vancouver's best beach days happen west of the Burrard Bridge. That stretch of shoreline runs from Kits Beach to Spanish Banks, with the mountains across the water the whole way. Golden Hour HQ sits right in the middle of it, on West Broadway in Kitsilano, so you can spend the day at the beach without a single parking hunt and be back for a rain shower, a turn in the rooftop sauna and cold plunge, and dinner off the BBQ on the rooftop deck.
In-suite laundry helps more than you'd think. Sandy towels and wet swimsuits go straight in the washer, not into a hotel bag for the rest of the trip.
The five beaches, and when to go
01Kitsilano Beach
The crown jewel. Heated saltwater pool (Canada's longest), beach volleyball, picnic lawns and front-row sunsets.
02Jericho Beach
Laid-back and leafy with a sailing centre. Calm water, log-lined sand and skyline views β a local golden-hour favourite.
03Spanish Banks
When the tide goes out it walks out forever. Wide-open sand flats, room to breathe and dog-friendly stretches.
04Locarno Beach
The quiet one. A protected, no-glass swimming beach between Jericho and Spanish Banks β peaceful and family-friendly.
05English Bay
Just across the water in the West End. Iconic, buzzing, and the prime viewing spot for the summer fireworks.
Kitsilano Beach
The classic. Volleyball nets, wide lawns, a long run of sand facing the city and the mountains, and Kitsilano Pool, an outdoor heated saltwater pool right on the shore that opens for the summer season. Kits gets busy on hot weekends, so go early for a spot on the logs, or late for the sunset. The Boathouse and Local Public Eatery are both right there for an after-beach drink.
Jericho Beach
Calmer and greener, with a sailing centre, a big park behind the sand and some of the best skyline views in the city. Ecomarine's Jericho Beach hut rents kayaks and paddleboards, and Windsure runs windsurfing and SUP lessons from the Jericho Sailing Centre. It's the local pick for a golden-hour walk.
Locarno Beach
The quiet one. Locarno sits between Jericho and Spanish Banks and is designated a quiet beach, which makes it a good call for families with small kids or anyone who wants to read without a speaker next to them.
Spanish Banks
When the tide goes out at Spanish Banks, the sand flats seem to go on forever. Kids can wander out a long way in ankle-deep water, and there are stretches where dogs are welcome. Check a tide table before you go: low tide is the whole point.
English Bay
Across False Creek in the West End, English Bay is the most famous beach in the city and the place to watch the summer fireworks. It's livelier and more urban than the Kits side, and a good excuse to combine the beach with a seawall walk or bike ride around Stanley Park.
Getting to the water from the house
Kits Beach and Jericho are an easy walk or a few minutes by bike from West Broadway. Locarno and Spanish Banks are a short ride further west along the waterfront path, and English Bay is a quick trip over the Burrard Bridge. If you'd rather not bring bikes, Spokes and Reckless both rent them, and several of the guides we recommend below will set you up for the seawall.
Off-season beach days
The beaches don't close in winter. Lifeguards and the outdoor pool are summer-only, but the waterfront paths, the storm-watching and the empty sand at Spanish Banks are some of the best things about Vancouver from October to April. Bring a rain jacket, grab a coffee on West 4th, and you'll have Jericho largely to yourselves.
